BURBANK, Calif. (November 29, 2012) — Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS) taps Jennifer Lee to join Chris Buck at the helm of its 53rd full-length animated feature “Frozen,” which is slated for the big screen on Nov. 27, 2013. Lee, who has contributed to the film’s screenplay, is one of the screenplay writers of this year’s hit arcade-hopping adventure “Wreck-It Ralph.”

Featuring the voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, “Frozen” is the coolest comedy-adventure ever to hit the big screen. When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekickreindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

“Frozen” producer Peter Del Vecho says the match-up is perfect. “Jenn has a real connection to the film and creates dynamic and relatable characters. Her sense of comedy, adventure and story structure paired with Chris Buck’s vast experience and incredible instincts create an ideal situation for this film.”

Lee’s screen adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights” is being produced by Troika Pictures. She has an original screenplay in development with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, and her original script “Lucid Dreams” was optioned by Wolfgang Peterson’s Radiant Productions. Lee holds an MFA in Film from Columbia University and a BA in English from the University of New Hampshire.

Buck directed (with Kevin Lima) Disney’s 1999 high-swinging feature “Tarzan,” which won an Oscar® and a Golden Globe® for Best Music/Original Song (Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart”). He directed(with Ash Brannon) 2007’s Oscar-nominated “Surf’s Up” for Sony Pictures Animation. His credits withinanimation also include 1989’s “The Little Mermaid,” “The Rescuers Down Under” (1990) and “Pocahontas” (1995).

With original songs by Tony®-award winner Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“In Transit”), “Frozen” journeys into theaters Nov. 27, 2013, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.
  • Why?
  • Problemi produttivi come con Brave?
Is it true that Jennifer Lee will be the primary director of the film and that Chris Buck was nearly sacked? Been hearing this from an insider from a forum who had also mentioned some weeks ago that the film was behind schedule. Any truth in this?

Also, were there problems with the story of production as a whole that led to the appointment of a new director?
I honestly cannnot say what the internal dynamics of the production titled Frozen are.

I was told when I was last inside the hat building that there were still "story issues" on the feature, and that John Lasseter was down (on that particular day) to review sequences, also to look at other features in work. He was also looking at various shorts in development.

In other words, it was a typical Lasseter work-day in Burbank. He flies down from up north, he spends time at the studio, he bops over to Glendale to look at Imagineering projects or Disney Toon features, he drops the corporate car off and goes back to Northern California.

Once in a looong while I run into him and say "hi," but I really have no idea what his routine is beyond what I hear second or third hand. (In other words, I'm a union guy far out of the loop, picking up scuttlebutt like everybody else. Most of the scuttlebutt I keep to myself.)

As for Chris Buck and whether he was/is in danger of not being the picture's director, I have no idea and I haven't heard. Chris is an experienced and talented animation top-kick; I think that's why he's still on the feature.

Disney's 'Frozen': Animated feature reveals icy concept art -- FIRST LOOK
    by Anthony Breznican

Here’s a little icebreaker from the makers of Frozen.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has debuted this exclusive concept image from its upcoming comedy adventure, just in time to make you feel good about your own December.

In this variation on the classic children’s tale The Snow Queen, kind-hearted Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) and her cliffhanging friend Kristoff (whose voice actor hasn’t been revealed yet) venture into the mountains to find her older sister Elsa (Idina Menzel) — who has the power to control wind and ice.

The perpetual winter their region is suffering through … Yeah, big sister is causing that.

“This is her sister’s magic. Elsa created this winter storm and ice formation,” says director Chris Buck (Surf’s Up, Tarzan). “We love the power of it, and yet there’s a magical quality to it also.”

“We wanted to push it to the extreme,” adds Jennifer Lee (screenwriter of Wreck-It Ralph), who is directing the film with him. “The unnatural quality of the ice emphasizes this is not, you know, sky-made ice, but ice made by someone.”

Most likely a not-very-nice person. “Elsa, um, has her moments,” says Buck.

“As you would, probably,” Lee adds.

Elsa, you see, was born with this magical control of snow and ice — which adds a little bit of superpower to what might otherwise be a fairy-tale world.

If you click on the image to expand, you’ll find snowflake shapes embedded within the ice. “You’ll see that shape throughout,” Buck says. “It’s very subtle, but that’s basically [evidence of] Elsa’s magic. That’s her signature.”

As you may be able to tell from the costumes, there’s a Scandinavian vibe to the movie — which is appropriate, since the author of The Snow Queen source material was Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. (He also penned The Little Mermaid, which inspired a much more beach-friendly Disney film.)

In addition to studying fjords and glaciers, the filmmakers also did research into the relationships between sisters and brothers. Disney hosted a massive “Sibling Summit” for the Frozen team, inviting employees to bring in their brothers or sisters and talk about their rivalries and relationships. “We got a ton of information from that, and it kind of grounds these characters in believability in magical and unbelievable world,” Buck says.

It’s fairly common for people to grow up feeling like they live in the shadow of an older brother or sister. “You just summed up my relationship with my sister instead,” joked Lee. “Anna is a very relatable character to those of us who are not superheroes. She’s wonderfully flawed, but fearless. And wants to do the right thing. Those are the characters I love.”

In addition to picking the brains of sisters, they also surveyed guys about their relationships with powerful women. “From the Kristoff angle, we were trying to get at what it’s like to be a guy, trying to understand women — basically,” Lee says with a laugh.

We still have a few seasons to go through before Frozen hits theaters nearly a year from now, on Nov. 27, 2013.
  • No.
